Nature Drawing in Pen & Ink

Mon 16 – Thurs 19 March 2020

£392 Residential  £264 Non-residential

In early Spring the habitats around the Kingcombe Centre and Sarah’s natural history specimens, provide inspiration and subject matter to illustrate in pen and ink.

This course is ideal for those that would like to keep a nature journal or sketchbook and/or want to explore the use of pen and ink in their working practice.  During the day you will explore the use of different inks and pens to create line and tonal drawings, which will then be enhanced with additional mark-making techniques.  Among the inks you can try are oak gall ink, which has been used for hundreds of years for historical illustrations and documents, and also walnut ink, often used to create tonal and pattern effects on the paper surface.  Mark-making tools will include twigs, as well as affordable technical drawing pens and traditional dip pens.

The Wildlife Garden Sketchbook

Thurs 30 July - Sun 2 August 2020

£362 Residential  £252 Non-residential

The wildlife and vegetable gardens at the Kingcombe Centre will provide an array of subject matter for this course.  Time will be spent understanding how a sketchbook and study pages can be used as a building block in developing our artistic skills and paintings, as well as a fun way of recording the wildlife in our gardens and other green spaces.  Focus areas will be botanical subjects, butterflies, birds, moths and other insects, as well as sketching in the wildlife garden itself.  The moth trap will also be used during the evenings so that we can observe and record the moths occurring in the wildlife garden.

A British made A4 watercolour sketchbook will be provided as part of the course and there will be the opportunity to use and develop several forms of media – graphite pencil, watercolour, pen and ink, pen and wash.
