ONLINE LEARNING EXPERIENCES

1st Course Promo.jpg

For a long time Sarah has wanted to develop an online course that is an extension of her book 'Natural History Illustration in Pen & Ink'.

Within this self-paced course there will be the opportunity to explore and understand depth and detail in pen and ink at a much deeper level, which it is hoped will enhance your natural history illustrations.

The course is suitable for those with some experience of working in pen and ink.

There will be a course handbook and a number of videos where Sarah will demonstrate a variety of techniques.  Not only that, some of the course will take place on location where you will join Sarah in the woodlands of the New Forest and along the coast.  As well as focusing on depth and detail in your illustrations she will show you how to recognise the different visual layers when working on location, so that you will experience a holistic approach in understanding and illustrating your chosen subjects and the habitats in which they live.

The main pens used in the course will be fine-line pens and Sarah will also introduce you to the Kuretake Bimoji Fude Pens.  They are classed as brush pens, but in actual fact some of the nibs are quite firm.  The ink they produce is a lovely dense black.

  • Would you like to improve your pen and ink techniques?

  • Do you feel that your illustrations may lack form and visual depth?

  • Would you like to gain confidence working on location?

  • Do you want to get the most from your materials and equipment?

  • Would you like to increase your ecological knowledge so that you can fully appreciate and understand your chosen subjects and habitats?

  • Do you want to illustrate habitat elements to include in future illustrations?

  • Would you like to create interesting compositions, both in your sketchbook and full illustrations?

Then this course may be just what you are looking for!

The course and all content will be hosted on an easy to use, secure online platform.

  • Course handbook: This will be in PDF format which can be downloaded or printed, so that you can have it by your side as you work

  • High quality instructional videos:  Both in the studio and on location

  • Flexible format: The course will be self-paced, in a modular format, so you can work when you want to and make the most of seasonal subject matter.  Tutorials are not assessed

  • Long-term access:  Indefinite access to all content

  • Secure online platform: Allowing you to have access to a wide range of learning resources focusing on pen and ink illustration and the natural world.

  • Affordable materials and equipment: None of the materials used for the course are prohibitively expensive and are carefully curated to ensure they are available from a range of locations and countries.
